Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)
Endodontic treatment, more commonly known as root canal therapy is required when the pulp of the tooth has become infected causing pain or tooth ache. The dental pulp contains soft tissue, blood and nerves; however, once the tooth has fully formed it can function normally without the pulp. Severe decay can cause fractures in the tooth that can expose the pulp to bacteria. The bacteria build up can cause the pulp to become infected and if it cannot repair itself the pulp can die, therefore, it will need to be removed to prevent any further damage to the natural tooth and gums. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the gum tissues which are the supporting structures of the tooth. These supporting structures will weaken and cause the tooth to become loose and fall out. To prevent further infection and avoid the tooth falling out, it is best to undergo root canal therapy to save the natural tooth indefinitely.
The procedure involves removing the dead pulp through a tiny opening on the tooth’s crown, cleaning and disinfecting the canal areas within the tooth and then filling and sealing it with a composite resin. The whole treatment can take multiple visits to the dentist depending on the severity of the infection.
