Gum (Periodontal) Disease
Periodontal disease is the infection of the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, ligaments and jaw bone. It can be a major cause of tooth loss in adults. When oral hygiene is not performed correctly the bacteria in plaque can build up on the teeth and spread to the gum line causing the soft tissues to become inflamed and lead to swelling and bleeding. This is known as gingivitis, which is the first stage of periodontal disease.
If gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to the next stage which is called periodontitis.
Periodontitis causes the gums to swell further and detach from the tooth allowing the teeth to become loose and fall out. Severe periodontal disease can spread deeper into the jaw bone and ligaments where the bone will begin to break down completely.
It is important to practice good oral hygiene and visiting the dentist for a check up once every six months. Arrange an oral health check up at All Saints Dental Group with one of our professional dentists or hygienists.
