10 GREAT DENTAL HYGIENE TIPS

10 GREAT DENTAL HYGIENE TIPS

    1. BRUSH TWICE A DAY

Ideally, we should brush after every meal but aim to brush at least twice a day, and rinse with water if you can’t brush after a meal. Ask your Dentist or Hygienist for the correct technique too!

  1. FLOSSING

Doesn’t matter how good your technique is with brushing food particles still accumulate between your teeth. We recommend flossing once a day to ensure all surfaces of your teeth are clean.

  1. THE RIGHT DIET

Food and drinks should be free of added sugar as much as possible. Sugar in the food and drinks you consume feed the bacteria in the plaque on your teeth to produce acids. These acids attack the enamel on your teeth. So, limit your intake of sugary drinks and foods and rinse or brush after eating them if you can.

Drink fluoridated tap water or plain milk instead of juices, cordial or soft drinks. Choose fresh fruit over dried fruit, cut out added sugar to tea and coffee and did you know that eating a piece of cheese after you have consumed sugary foods can assist with reversing the decay process?

  1. LIMIT SNACKING BETWEEN MEALS

Limiting the number of times you put food into your mouth limits the amount of time your teeth are subject to acid attack. When you do eat between meals, try to choose snacks of fresh fruit, vegetables sticks, natural yoghurt, plain popcorn, soups or cheese instead of sugary snacks and rinse your mouth with water if you can’t brush your teeth.

  1. CHANGE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH REGULARLY

Manual or electric toothbrush is your choice however all toothbrush bristles deteriorate with time and usage so replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head regularly.

When choosing a manual toothbrush a smaller head ensures you can easily reach your back teeth. Softer bristles are also kinder to your gums and teeth.

  1. CHOOSE A FLUORIDATED TOOTHPASTE

Fluoride helps harden enamel and make it more resistant to tooth decay. Choose a low fluoride toothpaste for children under 6 and use only a tiny amount when they under three. The amount can increase to the size of a pea between 3 and 6.

  1. BRUSH YOUR TONGUE

Cleaning your tongue not only helps to banish bacteria, it also helps to freshen your breath.

  1. REGULAR DENTAL CHECKUPS

Regular dental examinations help to identify problems early. Treating problems early may keep treatment and your out of pocket expenses smaller!

  1. PROTECT YOUR MOUTH WHILE PLAYING SPORT

Accidents and trauma can cause tooth fracture or tooth loss. Wearing a professionally fitted mouthguard while playing sport can help prevent or minimise damage to your teeth.

  1. AVOID HABITS THAT ARE HARMFUL TO YOUR TEETH

You should avoid tobacco and other substances that are harmful for your teeth. Don’t open bottle tops with your teeth! Sucking your thumb, clenching your teeth and tongue thrusting can all be harmful to your teeth. You can consult your Dentist for appropriate treatment.

Whiter teeth are an easy way to refresh your whole smile. If you want to correct stained or yellowed teeth, you may be a candidate for teeth whitening. Sometimes referred to as bleaching, teeth whitening is a non-invasive treatment which whitens the natural colour of tooth enamel.

At All Saints Dental Group we provide both “In Chair” and “Take home” whitening. Our knowledgeable dentists can help you select the right treatment option to meet your goals and budget. We use Opalescence® products which our patients have found to the most effective over the years.

Teeth whitening may be an option for people with discoloured teeth. Discolouration is typically staining that is caused by dark coloured foods including red wine, beetroot, soy sauce and smoking, genetics or simply age.

However, whitening is not suitable for everyone. Teeth whitening will not be effective on teeth that are internally stained. Your dentist can recommend an alternative solution for internal tooth whitening during your consultation.

How Do I Determine which whitening treatment is best for me?

In chair whitening offers fast, effective results. Sit back in comfort and let us do the work. Your dentist applies a whitening gel in conjunction with a laser to accelerate the results and chemically lighten your tooth enamel. In under an hour your whitening treatment is complete and you are free to go on your way.

If you suffer from sensitive teeth or gums, your dentist may recommend take home whitening treatment.

Take home whitening is convenient, cost-effective and less likely to cause teeth or gum sensitivity. During your treatment, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth to create a custom-fitted plastic tray to use at home. You will be supplied with a professional strength whitening gel suitable for your teeth, along with a demonstration on how to use the kit in the comfort of your own home to achieve the best possible results.

Although over-the-counter whitening kits are available at chemists, they are generally not as safe or effective as professional in-chair whitening. It is safer for you to whiten your teeth under the supervision of a qualified dentist to ensure your individual oral health needs are met before whitening takes place.

Professional in-chair whitening gel has a stronger concentration of bleach, making it more effective than over-the counter-brands.

Over-the-counter trays can also be ill-fitting and can fail to protect the soft tissues in your mouth and the success of the gel being applied accurately.

PREVENTIVE DENTAL CARE SAVES YOU $$$$

“Prevention is definitely better than cure” as far as your teeth and overall health are concerned. Keeping your regular preventive dental care appointment with our friendly hygienists allows potential problems to be detected early and often treatment is smaller, far less invasive and usually much less expensive.

The Preventive Dental Care Program at All Saints Dental Group includes:

  1. Regular 6 monthly Preventive Dental Care appointments for a professional clean, polish and fluoride treatment. This removes the built up plaque that we all miss with our brushing and keeps your teeth and gums healthy and strong.
  2. Thorough Diagnostic examinations to identify dental issues before they escalate. (Conducted by your Dentist)
  3. Oral Hygiene Education to ensure good brushing and flossing techniques at home and also advice regarding the proper diet and nutrition required for healthy gums and teeth .
  4. Oral cancer screening.
  5. Customised fitting of mouthguards to protect your teeth from costly and painful damage when playing contact sports.

If you have Health Fund Insurance (depending on your level of coverage) many of these treatments can be provided with little or even no gap payment.

Remember, if you don’t adequately care for your teeth and gums, poor oral hygiene can lead to infection and disease which left untreated can contribute to the development of other health issues. This is costly for your wallet and your overall health.
